Hey guys, it’s Steph from Make and Tell here dropping by to share a quick and easy Christmas gift topper project with you! Before we get started, I should probably admit that I’m usually so behind on my gift buying that it’s a wonder my presents get wrapped at all. But on the rare occasions that I’ve left enough time to get creative with my wrapping, the whole process truly becomes one of my favourite parts of the season. I guess that’s the big ol’ stationery nerd in me coming out to play I just can’t say no to all that paper, ribbon and colour!
This year, I thought I’d make some yarn wrapped stars to add to my gifts and they’re so easy to DIY that I’m finding it hard to stop! Luckily, these little guys also make great Christmas tree decorations so I guess I know where I’ll be putting the leftovers.

DIY Yarn Wrapped Star Gift Toppers
Materials
- Yarn or embroidery floss
- Wire (I used 20 gauge jewellery wire)
- Wire cutters
- Pliers
- Small star shaped items (I used cookie cutters)
- A wrapped gift
Step 1
Get your wire and start shaping it around a star shaped object (like a cookie cutter). Cut off the excess, making sure you leave enough wire to wind the ends together.
Step 2
Twist the wire ends of your star together with a pair of pliers to close off the shape. Just before you finish twisting, place one end of your yarn between the two pieces of wire so that the yarn is clamped in place. Try to keep the twisted wire as neat as possible so that the sides of your star remain nice and straight.
Step 3
Start winding the yarn that you trapped between the two ends of your wire all the way around the star. The twisted wire will hold the end of the yarn in place so that it doesn’t unravel as you wind the rest of your yarn around the star.
Step 4
Once you’ve covered the whole star with yarn, tie a knot to keep it from unravelling.
Step 5
Place the star in the middle of your gift and loop the yarn around the back of the gift. Then tie it to the other end of your star and trim off any excess.
That’s all there is to it; pretty easy hey? I love how delicate these little gift toppers look on a nicely wrapped present, and don’t forget once each gift has been unwrapped the recipient can use the star afterwards as a Christmas tree decoration!

Hi, I’m Steph, I’m a DIY fiend and I write a blog called Make and Tell where I share my creations with fellow makers. Paper projects are my specialty but I enjoy all kinds of crafts and I love to experiment with different materials to find new, affordable and innovative ways to DIY. When I’m not busy crafting up a storm, you’ll most likely find me at one of the cafes or beaches in sunny Sydney, Australia.
